"Down in the deep, gloomy bottom of one of its darkest and most secluded cañons, I once came upon a curiosity seldom found anywhere, in the shape of a complete and untouched skeleton of a grizzly, unfound even by the wolves and foxes. It was bleached clean and white, with just enough of the cartilaginous attachments remaining to hold all together. The position was one not unfrequently assumed by the animal in death, that is, prone on all fours, the head resting on the forepaws, something like a dog which waits impatiently for his master."
