Small Groups (2024) features a group of loosely-rendered figures gathering over a luscious red carpet set under an open sky. In her distinctive painterly style, Omuku’s figures dissolve before the blues, reds and oranges that engulf the foreground. Merging the interior and exterior worlds, Omuku heightens focus on the scene’s setting over the anonymous figures depicted. Inspired by a visit to a friend’s home in Lagos amid the rising political, economic and social strife that followed Nigeria’s presidential election in 2023, Small Groups interlaces the intimate atmosphere found among friends with the sustaining forces of nature.
