Orange Bougainvillea (2024) presents groups of anonymous figures dancing and celebrating in a bright orange garden. Immersed in loose abstract marks and rounded impressions of clusters of flowers, the figures appear to dissolve into their environment, built from careful paint layers over vintage sanyan. Realized in the wake of a fire in Omuku’s Lagos studio, the painting translates the moment of joy the artist felt when seeing her orange bougainvillea in full bloom despite the surrounding chaos. In Omuku’s own words, “The painting was born out of necessity.”
