Waters Covered the Sea (2024) depicts purple imaginary clouds and crashing waves that extend beyond the ocean. The waves transform into abstract marks as they encroach upon a group of figures in the foreground, whose mixed reactions capture a sense of uncertainty as the linear perspective of the landscape flattens into broad strokes of brown paint. Realized after a flood in her Lagos studio, Waters Covered the Sea channels Omuku’s desire to translate turmoil into calm. Drawing inspiration from the studio’s view of the ocean, this work confronts contradictory associations of water as both a potential source of destruction but also of peace and tranquility.
