Join artist Daniel Gordon to celebrate the release of his latest monograph, Objects at Hand, newly published by Radius Books. Olney Gleason will host a Radius Books Pop-Up within the related exhibition Daniel Gordon: Objects at Hand at 297 Tenth Avenue, New York, on Wednesday, May 20, from 4pm to 7pm. Objects at Hand will be available for purchase alongside a selection of recent titles from Radius Books. Gordon will be signing copies of his new monograph from 5pm to 7pm.
Objects at Hand is Gordon's fifth monograph and documents his series Light Study. The publication includes a new essay by Kevin Moore and a conversation between Gordon and artist Lucas Blalock.
Begun in 2024, Gordon's Light Study series sees the artist working exclusively in black and white – a first in his two-decade career. Stripped of the saturated color for which he is known, the photographs foreground shadow, surface, and sculptural form. They are more tightly cropped than his previous images, intimate in scale, their attention trained on the objects immediately surrounding him: glasses, kitchenware, stationery, combs, scissors.
Across two decades, Gordon has built a body of work that dissolves the boundaries between photography, sculpture, and collage. The artist prints images from the internet, then cuts and assembles them into three-dimensional paper constructions that approximate the form of the original object. He then stages, lights, and photographs these constructions, inviting viewers into an active process of questioning reality versus perceived interpretation. Objects at Hand extends the artist's inquiry into newly restrained territory, finding in the familiar objects of domestic life – and in the interplay of light, shadow, and surface – a sustained meditation on how images are made, how they deceive, and how, despite or because of their deceptions, they hold our attention.
