• Biography

Kour Pour is an American artist of British and Iranian descent whose work investigates how images travel, transform, and acquire meaning across cultures and time. Drawing from a wide range of global visual traditions, Pour complicates the notion of fixed cultural origins and reveals the exchanges, adaptations, and contradictions embedded within familiar imagery. Through processes of layering, reproduction, and erasure, Pour creates compositions that prompt shifts in perspective, inviting us to reconsider what we see.

Pour’s studio practice exists between painting and printmaking. Alongside sweeping gestures and intricate hand painting, he explores the possibilities of printmaking as a process of transfer and transformation, extending its techniques beyond conventional applications. His compositions emerge through meticulous steps of layering and accumulation, interrupted by acts of erasure. This oscillation between what is visible and invisible is essential – what is removed becomes as significant as what remains.

Movement is central to Pour’s practice. Multiple bodies of work evolve in the studio simultaneously, as he explores shared ideas through distinct visual languages. These varied approaches create different points of entry for viewers, probing taste, cultural preference, and the ways we assign meaning and value to images. The movement within the studio echoes a broader interest in the circulation of goods, people, and ideas throughout history, shaped in part by Pour’s own experience navigating between cultures.

Pour opened his first solo museum exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, in 2025-2026, where three major paintings explored how different cultures envision the cosmos. He debuted his celebrated Porcelain paintings in 2026, employing erasure as a generative tool to explore the circulation of ceramic motifs and cobalt blue pigment. He gained early recognition for his Carpet paintings, rendering vibrant patterns over carefully prepared canvases. The carpet would later serve as a framework for Pour to layer multiple visual traditions together, a format he would transgress in his shaped canvases that reconsider familiar histories of abstraction.

Beyond his studio practice, Pour maintains a multidisciplinary engagement in community building. He operates Guest House, a project space he founded in 2022 in his studio complex to support immigrant and diaspora artists with exhibitions, residencies, and public programs.

Kour Pour earned his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design (2010). He has exhibited in museums and galleries across North America, Europe, and Asia, including solo exhibitions at Kotaro Nukaga, Tokyo (2026), Aga Khan Museum, Toronto (2025), Nazarian/Curcio, Los Angeles (2025), Gallery 1957, London (2022), Kavi Gupta, Chicago (2021), Shrine and Sargent’s Daughters, New York (2021) and others. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery, Cantor Arts Center, Orlando Museum of Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum and elsewhere. His work is collected by the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Hood Museum of Art, Orange County Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, The Bunker Artspace, Art Jameel Collection, Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation, and Yageo Foundation, among other collections. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
